Robertson’s CBN became The Family Channel in the 1980s, airing The 700 Club and other TV reruns, and he later sold the cable channel to Fox, which was renamed Fox Family. Robertson was the former host of The 700 Club, a Christian news and television program broadcast live from CBN studios on Freestyle (previously ABC Family), as well as on stations across the United States and on CBN network members around the world. Robertson announced his retirement from the 700 Club in October 2021, on the 60th anniversary of the first broadcast of what later became CBN on October 1, 1961, at the age of 91.

On August 11, 2017, Robertson was admitted to the hospital after suffering minor injuries in a horseback riding accident. Robertson suffered an embolic stroke at his home in Virginia Oceanside on February 2, 2018. When his relative noticed his side effects, he alerted crisis clinical faculty. He was then taken to the nearest stroke center and treated with the coagulation-busting drug tPA. Around eighty minutes after his stroke began, Robertson was responsive, alert, and moving each of his appendages. He was released two days later and recovered at home. Following this incident, Robertson and his family expressed gratitude to the paramedics and clinical staff for their “exceptional consideration and quick response.”
