MS has numerous forms, with new symptoms appearing in single incidents (relapsing forms) or gradually developing over time (progressive forms). In recurrent forms of MS, symptoms may resolve completely between attacks, but some lasting neurological abnormalities are common, particularly as the disease progresses. In the progressive types of MS, physiological function gradually deteriorates and impairment worsens once symptoms appear, and will continue to do so if the disease is not treated.
