Richie was diagnosed with MS in 2015. Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune illness that destroys the insulating coverings of nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. Richie launched the gossip website TheDirty.com in March 2007 as DirtyScottsdale.com while residing in Scottsdale, Arizona. Dirtyscottsdale.com’s content was initially focused on Richie’s personal criticism of Scottsdale and its club scene. The later and more commonly known version of TheDirty.com allows users to anonymously publish their own “dirt” such as news, gossip, accusations, images, videos, or text, as well as comment on material submitted by others.
Richie ran TheDirty.com secretly until September 4, 2008, when he was arrested for DUI and dangerous driving in Scottsdale. When word of his arrest spread, Richie publicly revealed his true identity. In a March 2019 Instagram post, Richie said that he had’retired’ from TheDirty.com in April 2018.
Richie was interviewed by Phil McGraw on an episode of Dr. Phil titled “Dirt, Lies, and the Internet.” in November 2010. McGraw questioned Richie on the morality of a website that allows users to publicly trash each other with harsh and vulgar comments, to which Richie replied that such a website exists in the marketplace. She responded, “Well, there’s a marketplace for heroin too, but that doesn’t justify being a heroin addict.”
In November 2011, Richie was questioned by talk show host Anderson Cooper, during which he was confronted by Sarah Jones, a former Cincinnati Bengals cheerleader and high school teacher who was suing Richie for slander. Richie appeared in a second interview with Anderson Cooper, which aired in January 2012. In June 2011, the ABC News program 20/20 included a report on Richie and his legal battle with Sarah Jones.
Richie and his then-wife Shayne Lamas starred in Season 2 of VH1’s reality show Couples Therapy in late 2012, alongside several other couples. In the season’s last episode, Richie and Lamas reaffirmed their marital vows in a live broadcast. Richie and Lamas appeared together in a Couples Therapy reunion episode that aired in 2014. Sex, Lies, and The Dirty, Richie’s memoir, was released in May 2013.
