Nick McCallum Interview

McCallum apologized to 3AW listeners in December 2007, stating that he had been duped in an interview with a man claiming to be Peter John Walker, who escaped from Pentridge Prison with Ronald Ryan in 1965. Ryan was Australia’s last executioner, hung in 1967 for the murder of jail guard George Hodson. During the questioning, the individual denied killing Hodson or Ryan. After hearing the interview, the genuine Peter John Walker, who was released from prison in 1983, came forward. McCallum, who was filling in for regular morning show host Neil Mitchell, apologized to the audience. The revelation sparked a flood of talkback calls, with some accusing McCallum of being foolish and others praising him for having the bravery to publicly admit he had made a mistake.
