Matter grew up on his parents’ dairy farm in Edmonton, Alberta, and is of Irish and Russian origin. He is a third-generation oil rigger who has spent eight years working on oil rigs in Northern Alberta. He engaged in drama studies at the age of thirteen on the recommendation of a school teacher, and went on to win Best Actor in a provincial drama tournament in 1999.
However, after getting himself into trouble at the age of 17, his parents sent him to work on oil rigs for three months with his grandfather.He has admitted that this experience helped him focus on his schoolwork and pass his high school examinations.He continued to work on oil rigs with his grandfather and brother Trevor until the age of 25, while also moving to Vancouver and enrolling in Vancouver Film School to pursue his long-term goal of becoming an actor.

Matter was 25 years old when he was nearly crushed within the cab of a 17-ton drilling rig while working on oil rigs. His quad muscle had separated from his femur, and he was on the verge of losing his right leg. It took six months for him to be totally rehabilitated, with extensive treatment required to restore his ability to walk. When he returned to the oil rigs, he saw another accident in which a man lost both legs. This convinced him that it was time to move on, so he resigned and moved back to Vancouver, where he lied his way into a bartender job before earning his first acting gig.

He appeared as Zane Donovan on Eureka. Zane Donovan initially appears in the Season 2 episode “E=MC…?” He’s had run-ins with the law in the past (supposedly crashed the New York Stock Exchange and numerous counts of identity fraud) and is frequently petulant, smug, and snarky. Though a bit of a jerk, he is actually highly clever, having been accepted to MIT at the age of 13 (only to be kicked out), then Yale, Columbia, and other elite colleges at the age of 15, all before the age of 18.

He also becomes more pleasant and relaxed around Carter, Allison Blake, and the others, which is a significant turnaround from his previous conduct.

He appeared as Greg Davis, a recurring character in the fourth series of the Beverly Hills, 90210 continuity. Adrianna Tate-Duncan and Navid Shirazi met with Greg and Leslie Davis to consider adopting her kid once it was born. Adrianna chose them to adopt her baby after they answered her inquiries enthusiastically and with the greatest responses of all the parents.
Greg and Leslie were at the hospital to adopt Maisy in the season finale. Greg met Silver while she was at California University with her friends, and she asked him to Naomi Clark’s house for Thanksgiving dinner. Silver spent Christmas at Greg’s place, where they began dating. Silver met with Greg at CU, and he was eager for her to meet his three-year-old daughter.
Greg explains to Silver that his daughter, Maisy, was adopted from a local schoolgirl who simply wanted her daughter to go to a good family. Dixon Wilson and Navid spot Silver and Greg the next day and go over to talk. Navid notices Greg and realizes that he is the man who adopted Adrianna’s child. After Navid informs Adrianna, she kidnaps Maisy, but Silver tracks them down and forces them to return. Silver ultimately tells Greg the truth. He decides to end his relationship with Silver and relocates to New York with Maisy.
