Travis’s first job after graduating from high school was in the play It’s Hard to Be a Jew, which was performed at The American Jewish Theatre in New York City. Travis then appeared in a stage adaptation of Neil Simon’s Brighton Beach Memoirs and co-founded the Off-Broadway theater company Naked Angels. She appeared in Aven U-Boys, a Frank Pugliese play, as well as King of Connecticut. I’m Not Rappaport was her Broadway debut. She made her film debut in Athol Fugard’s My Children, My Africa.
Travis appeared in a Tom Cruise-directed episode of the Showtime series Fallen Angels in 1993, alongside Peter Gallagher and Isabella Rossellini. Travis starred in the CBS sitcom Almost Perfect from 1995 to 1997. After two seasons, the show was canceled. Travis was also a producer on the short-lived TV series Work with Me, which she starred in in 1999. The show was canceled after four episodes due to low ratings. Travis played psychology professor, Dr. Joyce Reardon, in the four-hour television adaptation of Stephen King’s Rose Red in 2002. Travis was cast as Chris Connor in the CBS sitcom Becker in 2002.
Travis was cast opposite Tim Allen in the ABC sitcom Last Man Standing in 2011 Travis was also cast as Emmeline “Mrs. H” Hattenbarger in The CW medical drama series Hart of Dixie at the same time, but due to her commitments with the 20th Century Fox-produced Last Man Standing, she left the show after two episodes. After six seasons and 130 episodes, Last Man Standing was canceled in 2017, but was revived by Fox in the fall of 2018. On September 28, 2018, the show premiered and received its highest rating since season two. After 194 episodes, the series concluded in 2021.
