She came to New York City after graduating from college and performed in concerts, readings, and charitable events. She was part of the original cast of Freckleface Strawberry, an Off-Broadway show. Smith earned national prominence when she was chosen to be the face of Wendy’s Restaurants’ advertising campaign, Now That’s Better. Television advertising using that subject started appearing in April 2012. Originally a dark blonde, she had her hair tinted “orangey red” for the commercial role. Smith moved to Los Angeles after being cast as Shelby Fox, a series regular alongside Craig T. Nelson, in NBC’s Coach remake. After the program was not renewed, she returned as Candi Caruso in Veep Seasons 5 and 6. She recurred as Agent Alison Rhymer in the Netflix series Messiah. She has had recurring roles on television series Veep and Messiah. She is best known as Red, the “Wendy’s Girl” in TV commercial ads for Wendy’s restaurants in 2012–16.
