Petty was born in North Carolina, Randleman. At the age of 18, he debuted his major-league stock car. In 1979 he won the first race in one of the old 1978 Dodge Magnum cars of his father, the Daytona ARCA 200; at that time Petty was the youngest rider to win a major stock car competition. He made his debut at the Winston Cup Series later this season; once more, STP Dodge Magnum was no. 42 for the team of his kin. In his first series race, the 1979 Talladega 500, he ran five races and finished ninth. In 1980, he started fifteen in the 42nd position and finished six top ten, placing twenty-eighth.

His dad’s No. 43 started in the 1981 season in one race, then finished in the top ten times, and finished twelfth in points in his usual No. 42 schedules. It started the 1982 season with two top tennis finishes, but later divided time between its No. 42 and Hoss Ellington’s UNO/STP No. 1 car and finished 15 in point in the season. In 1983, he obtained 7-Eleven support and thus changed his number to 7. He only finished with two top 10, but he improved to the 13th position. The following year he followed six top-tens but dropped three points.
