She was the first American to win the title, having previously been named Miss USA in 1954. Stevenson was Miss South Carolina USA 1954 before becoming Miss USA. She also represented South Carolina in Miss America 1954, where she finished in the top ten after winning Miss South Carolina in 1953. Stevenson finished Miss Universe in a tie with Martha Rocha of Brazil. Due to Catalina Swimwear being a major sponsor of the pageant, the woman deemed to have the better physique was crowned the winner to break the tie. Stevenson was identified as the culprit due to his “fitter” hips than Rocha. Christiane Martel of France, the outgoing Miss Universe, crowned her.
Stevenson made headlines in Variety after announcing that she would be returning home to South Carolina to finish her education at Lander University rather than continuing her work at Universal Studios in Hollywood for a year as part of her Miss Universe package. Stevenson found work in South Carolina hosting television shows for WIS, the local NBC affiliate in Columbia. She met her husband, Donald Upton, here; they have two children, Donald Jr., a former telecom executive and the founder of the global economic development and public affairs firm Fairfield Index, Inc. Stevenson worked in the media as a model, television presenter, and actress until the 1970s, in national commercials, and also participated as a judge at several Miss Universe competitions.
