Michael Weishan Career
From 2001 to 2007, he hosted the public television series The Victory Garden. He was the series’ fourth host, and he left after five seasons to focus on his landscape design firm, Michael Weishan and Associates, which specializes in creating traditionally inspired landscapes for homes across the United States and Canada. Weishan has appeared on numerous national TV shows in the United States, including the Today Show on NBC and the CBS Early Show, in addition to his work on PBS. From 1999 to 2001, he hosted his own weekly NPR show, The Cultivated Gardener, and he continues to appear as a guest contributor on NPR’s venerable environmental news program Living on Earth, where he first appeared in the 1990s.
For five years, Weishan was the gardening editor at Country Living and a frequent contributor to various national publications, including New Old House Magazine, where he wrote a quarterly gardening column. Weishan’s landscape design research intersects with a lifelong interest in architecture, architectural design, and archaeology, and his first published work (1991) was as editor and co-contributor (along with noted Harvard archaeologist George M.A. Hanfmann) of The Byzantine Shops at Sardis, volume 9 of the Sardis Archaeological Series published by Harvard University Press. Weishan, a Harvard College honors graduate in Classics and Romance Languages, is involved in many charities and non-profit organizations, particularly those related to history and FGLI (first generation/low income) college programming at Harvard and other institutions across the country.
In 2013, Weishan, as executive director of the Foundation, co-authored (with Dr. Cynthia Koch, past director of the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum) FDR: A Life in Pictures, a new biography of Franklin Delano Roosevelt. He published two books as president and CEO of the Southborough, Massachusetts Historical Society, “Lost Southborough” and “Tales of Old Southborough.” He is currently in charge of the construction of Southborough’s new history and arts center, which will be housed in a restored 1910 village hall. The new center is scheduled to open in 2024.
