The Desert and the Sea was a Nielsen best-seller in August 2018, immediately after its July 24, 2018 release. Moore was the theatrical columnist for SF Weekly until 2005, when he relocated to Berlin, Germany. In Germany, he worked for Spiegel Online International as both a staff and freelance editor. He covered a trial of eleven Somalis in 2010-11.
His work has appeared in publications such as The Atlantic Monthly, The New Republic, and The Los Angeles Times. From 2009 to 2012, he also authored a weekly piece on trans-Atlantic matters for Miller-McCune (now Pacific Standard), including the NATO effort against Somali pirates. For the column, he sailed on the Turkish frigate Gediz, which was tasked with capturing pirates in the Gulf of Aden in 2009.
