Subsequent to moving on from Yale College in 1985, Harris worked at Amusement Week after week. He started as a writer and later became leader manager of the magazine.

Beginning around 2008, he has composed and delivered three books. The first, Pictures at an Upset: Five Films and the Introduction of the New Hollywood, an assessment of how the American entertainment world changed during the 1960s, was distributed in February 2008. It is an assessment of five U.S. movie chiefs — John Passage, William Wyler, John Huston, Straightforward Capra and George Stevens — and their bleeding edge work during The Second Great War. The book was generally welcomed, with The New York Times calling it, “a resolute, data stuffed and powerfully decipherable work”, and The Washington Post composing that the book “has every one of the components of a decent film: captivating characters, difficulties, clashes and extreme activity”.
