Holmes, who joined CNNI in 1996 as the network’s first Australian anchor, has also traveled to more than 80 countries and reported extensively from Asia, Europe, the Middle East, Mexico, India, Nepal, Africa, Pakistan, and Afghanistan. He reported from the Mexico-Guatemala border on the Central American migrant crisis, as well as the drowning deaths of an El Salvadoran man and his young daughter, whose bodies were discovered together on the banks of the Rio Grande after attempting to cross into the United States. Other recent assignments have included reporting on the deadly protests on the Gaza-Israel border, the Israeli elections, and the fire at Paris’ Notre Dame Cathedral.

Holmes has reported on a number of conflicts, including those in Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, and the West Bank and Gaza. He covered the Iraq war from the start, making more than a dozen trips there, usually for weeks at a time. He covered every aspect of the war, from the insurgency and occupation to Saddam Hussein’s trial and execution. In January 2004, he survived an ambush on a two-vehicle CNN convoy that killed two CNN employees and injured one. Holmes spent several weeks in Iraq in the fall of 2016 covering the Iraqi-led offensive to retake Mosul from ISIS. His reporting helped CNN win a Peabody Award in 2016 for its coverage of the Battle for Mosul, ISIS in Iraq and Syria, and Undercover in Syria.

He reported from Brussels in March 2016 following the deadly terror attacks at Zaventum airport and Maelbeek metro station. Holmes covered Belgium’s response to the ISIS attacks for several days, even securing an exclusive interview with a family member of Belgian jihadist Hicham Chaib.

In 2015, Holmes anchored CNN’s breaking news coverage of the Paris terrorist attacks, which earned her a 2016 Royal Television Society (RTS) Award for ‘Best Breaking News Coverage.’ He’s spent much of his career covering the world’s hotspots, including Ukraine, where he anchored live from Kiev on the riots and was in Crimea for the contentious referendum that resulted in Russia’s annexation of Crimea.

He also covered the Libyan revolution that led to Moammar Gadhafi’s deposition, spending several weeks with Libyan rebels as they advanced from the western mountains and covering the at times fierce fighting in several towns and cities. During Israel’s incursion into the West Bank in 2002, John Holmes was one of the few journalists to report from inside Ramallah. He has also covered the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan extensively, witnessing violence on both sides of the conflict. His coverage of Hurricanes Sandy, Michael, Irma, and Maria earned him an Edward R. Murrow Award for natural disaster reporting.
