Mel Showers Career
In 1969, he began his broadcasting career at WKRG. Before becoming a lead news anchor in 1980, he held a variety of positions, including announcer and reporter. Showers was one of the Gulf Coast’s first people of color to anchor a newscast, breaking down racial barriers. After fifty years of full-time work at WKRG, he retired in 2019. He was inducted into Alabama’s Broadcasting Hall of Fame and named a “Journalist of Distinction” by the National Association of Black Journalists for his broadcasting career. He joined the United States Air Force after graduating from high school, where he served as a Military Intelligence Analyst in the Far East, Middle East, and other territories.
In 1969, he began working part-time for local television station WKRG-TV. In March 1970, he began working full-time as a booth announcer, providing live station identification and reading live commercials. In 1974, he began working as a reporter for the station’s newscast, Newscenter 5. He covered the police, the school board, and local government as a reporter. According to the Lagniappe, he was frequently the first person on the scene of major news stories. Among the major stories he covered in Mobile at the time were Hurricane Frederic in 1979 and Michael Donald’s lynching in 1981.
Showers has been named co-anchor of Newscenter 5’s morning edition. By 1990, he had moved to the evening newscasts, anchoring the 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. shows. He announced his retirement in 2019, and his final broadcast was on May 22, 2019. He will be known as “Anchor Emeritus,” and will return for “occasional special reports as well as his unique perspective on events affecting the Gulf Coast.”
