Chiquet returned to the United States in 1988, working as an assistant merchandiser for Gap Inc. in San Francisco. She was lauded in 1994 for her role in launching the Old Navy brand, which quickly rose to prominence and is now worth $5 billion. She later rose to the position of executive vice president of merchandising, planning, and production. She briefly worked for another Gap subsidiary, Banana Republic, in 2002.

Chiquet joined Chanel in 2003, calling it the most important decision of her career. A year later, she was named president of Chanel in the United States, where she was in charge of the fragrance and beauty, fashion, watches, and fine jewelry divisions. When Chanel restructured in 2007, Chiquet was named CEO of the entire company.

Chiquet was credited by Portfolio magazine with transforming Chanel into “the single most valuable fashion brand,” increasing its value to $6.2 billion. Chiquet announced his departure from Chanel in January 2016, citing “strategic differences.” According to the company’s statement, Chiquet was in charge of “Chanel’s successful international expansion enhanced its luxury positioning and timeless image, while also growing the business in all categories. She also established a truly global organization and improved the company’s culture and leadership.”

She was invited to give the opening keynote speech at the New York Times Luxury Conference in Versailles in April 2016.
