Shirvington usually competed in the 100-, 200-, and 4-x-100-meter relays, but the 100-meter sprint was where she had the most success. He participated in the Commonwealth Games in 1998 and 2006, the Athletics World Championships from 1999 to 2007, and the Olympic Games in 2000.
Shirvington won five Australian national 100-meter sprint titles in a row starting in 1998. He broke the Australian national 100-meter record at the Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur in 1998, placing fourth in the final with a time of 10.03 seconds. Until 2003, when Patrick Johnson clocked 9.93 seconds, Shirvington held the record. He also competed in two 60-meter finals of the World Indoor Championships.
