McDonnell appeared in two separate off-Broadway productions of Buried Child in 1978 and 1979, both as “Shelly.”In 1981, she received an Obie Award for Best Actress for her performance in the play Still Life. She has appeared on Broadway in the plays Execution of Justice, The Heidi Chronicles, and Summer and Smoke. McDonnell made her film debut in 1990 as Stands with a Fist, the daughter of American settlers raised by Sioux Indians, in Kevin Costner’s Dances with Wolves, after more than 21 years of theater and television work. McDonnell, who played the adopted daughter of Graham Greene’s character Kicking Bird, was only 10 months younger than Greene and less than two years younger than Tantoo Cardinal.

McDonnell received another Academy Award nomination for her performance in Passion Fish (1992), this time for Best Actress in a Leading Role.  Grand Canyon (1991), Sneakers (1992), Independence Day (1996), and Donnie Darko are among her other notable films (2001). McDonnell also co-starred in the 1988 film Tiger Warsaw with Patrick Swayze. She starred as a judge in the 1997 film 12 Angry Men. McDonnell made her television debut in 1980 on the soap opera As the World Turns. She appeared in the CBS medical comedy E/R in 1984. In 2001, she appeared as a guest star on the NBC medical drama ER. She was nominated for an Emmy for her role as Eleanor Carter on the show.

McDonnell played Laura Roslin in the Battlestar Galactica miniseries in 2003. The miniseries spawned a weekly series, with McDonnell reprising her role as Laura Roslin. The show concluded in March 2009. McDonnell received international acclaim for her performance in the show, which was featured in part when she was invited to the United Nations for a retrospective and discussion with Edward James Olmos (Admiral Adama). McDonnell took part in a Battlestar Galactica-themed special session at the 2009 World Science Festival. Michael Hogan was also present, as were scientists Nick Bostrom and Kevin Warwick. In the 2011 film Scream 4, she played Kate Roberts, the mother of Emma Roberts’ character.

McDonnell appeared in The Closer as Capt. Sharon Raydor, a police captain in the Force Investigation Division who frequently clashed with Kyra Sedgwick’s Golden Globe and Emmy-winning character. McDonnell was nominated for an Emmy in 2011 for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series for the role. Following the conclusion of The Closer’s final season in 2012, McDonnell’s character continued as the lead in the spin-off, Major Crimes, which premiered on August 13, 2012, and concluded in January 2018.
