Mary Badham Career

Badham has no prior film acting experience before being cast in To Kill a Mockingbird. Patty Duke, another child actress, won an Oscar in her category for The Miracle Worker. Badham became particularly close to Gregory Peck, who played Scout’s father, Atticus Finch, while filming; she maintained contact with him, always referring to him as “Atticus,” until his death in 2003. Peck called her “Scout” in response. Badham portrayed Sport Sharewood in “The Bewitchin’ Pool,” the final episode of the original Twilight Zone series. Due to technical difficulties, her voice in outside sequences was dubbed in postproduction by adult voice actor June Foray. She also appeared in the films This Property Is Condemned and Let’s Kill Uncle before retiring from acting.

Badham stepped out of retirement in 2005, at the request of actor/writer/director Cameron Watson, to make an eccentric cameo alongside Keith Carradine in his film Our Very Own. Watson indicated that he would not consider any other actress for the role. He had managed to contact her in Monroeville, Alabama, where she had been invited to see a stage production of To Kill a Mockingbird. On March 27, 2022, Badham made her theatrical debut as Mrs. Dubose in Aaron Sorkin’s stage adaption of To Kill a Mockingbird during the United States national tour. She joined President Barack Obama at the White House in 2012 for a screening of To Kill a Mockingbird to commemorate the film’s 50th anniversary.
