Following graduation, Steines worked in the newsroom at KWWL-TV in Waterloo, Iowa, eventually becoming a reporter and photographer. He was mistaken for Tom Cruise as a cameraman at the 1988 Republican National Convention and ended up on Entertainment Tonight.[5] He then went on to work as the sports anchor for KSPR in Springfield, Missouri, where he stayed until 1991. His career took him to KCAL-TV in Los Angeles, California, and ESPN. Steines received two Emmys and a Golden Mike Award for his work on KCAL specials. Steines has dabbled in acting. One of his roles was as a security guard in the 1995 film Nixon. He began working at Entertainment Tonight in 1995 as a correspondent and substitute anchor.
Steines was previously the anchor of Entertainment Tonight Weekend and the primary substitute anchor. In mid-September 2010, he returned to co-hosting ET Weekend on a regular basis. Longtime co-anchor Mary Hart left the show in May 2011, and Steines took over as the main anchor. However, it was announced on March 24, 2012, that Steines had decided to leave ET at the end of his contract in order to pursue other opportunities. Steines left ET after 17 years on July 27, 2012. Rob Marciano took his place. He appeared in an episode of America’s Next Top Model’s sixth season in 2006.
In the fall of 2006, Steines hosted AOL’s online reality television show Gold Rush, which was executive produced by Mark. He went on to host Home & Family with Paige Davis, a new Hallmark Channel TV talk show that debuted on October 1, 2012. Cristina Ferrare took over for Davis in November 2012. Debbie Matenopoulos replaced Cristina Ferrare as his new cohost on June 21, 2016. Steines was fired from the series in June 2018. In 2017, he took over as host of KTLA’s coverage of the Tournament of Roses parade, succeeding Bob Eubanks.
