From 2006 until 2016, he was the managing director of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. Prior to joining the ABC, Scott was a senior executive at Fairfax Media, where he was in charge of the editorial content of the company’s major newspapers, including The Sydney Morning Herald, The Age, The Sun-Herald, and The Sunday Age. Scott was appointed Secretary of the New South Wales Department of Education in June 2016. Scott was named the 27th Vice-Chancellor of the University of Sydney in March 2021, with effect from July 2021. Scott served for the Greiner Liberal government in New South Wales, serving as chief of staff to Education Minister Virginia Chadwick and as a senior adviser to Education Minister Terry Metherell.

He was appointed to a second five-year term as ABC managing director in 2010. His tenure at the ABC was marked by significant transformation, including the launch of ABC Me, a digital TV channel for children, and ABC News, a 24-hour news channel, as well as a significant growth into digital and online technologies and an increase in quality drama.
