Her debut film appearance was in When a Stranger Calls, a horror thriller from 2006. After minor roles in The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause and Resident Evil: Extinction, she landed her first major role in 2008, co-starring with Kevin Costner in Swing Vote. In 2010, she participated in Jackie Chan’s film The Spy Next Door. She appeared in the film adaptation of Wendelin Van Draanen’s novel, Flipped, directed by Rob Reiner. Carroll received critical acclaim for her performance in the film, and she starred in a number of other films in 2011 and 2012, including Mr. Popper’s Penguins, Machine Gun Preacher, and The Magic of Belle Isle.
Carroll began receiving offers for nude or promiscuous roles at the age of 15, which she declined owing to her personal views. She declined a larger role in the show Scandal in 2014, citing personal reasons, despite having already appeared in two episodes. She, Jon Erwin, and Jon Gunn penned the script for Kingdom’s inaugural production and Carroll’s screenwriting debut, I Still Believe, which premiered in March 2020.
