She was accepted to the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez at the age of 15, with the goal of graduating with a medical degree as a surgeon. She got her first job as an anchorwoman while she was there, when she was hired by a local radio station, WOLE, which covered the Mayagüez and Aguadilla areas.
Vélez spent some time in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She wanted to attend Syracuse University but decided to call WAPA-TV from San Juan’s airport to see if there were any internships available while on vacation in Puerto Rico. Vélez told her father to detour and stop at the WAPA-TV building on the way from Isla Verde International Airport in San Juan to her hometown of Mayagüez. Bill Perez, their news director, interviewed her there. She was given a screen test and was soon hired by the station, becoming the station’s first female newscaster.
