LaCuesta worked in the Army as a broadcast journalist for the American Forces Korea Network. He graduated from California State University, Los Angeles and San Jose State University (SJSU) with a B.A. in journalism and political science. He received the Sigma Delta Chi Award for reporting while attending SJSU. He earned an M.A. in journalism from the University of California, Los Angeles. He has worked as a writer for KNX/CBS Radio in Los Angeles and the Los Angeles Herald Examiner, as well as a producer for KABC-TV and KGO-TV in San Francisco. In 1976, he began working for KTVU, an Oakland-based television station. He previously taught journalism at SJSU and Menlo College.
