Wahl has been with the RT US branch since 2011. On March 3, 2014, she and colleague Abby Martin began criticizing RT’s coverage of the Russian Federation’s annexation of Crimea on-air. Wahl went off script and resigned from her job during a live segment on March 5, 2014, while criticizing her employer, RT. According to Wahl, “I cannot be part of a network funded by the Russian government that whitewashes the actions of Putin.” Wahl’s resignation video quickly went viral on the internet, garnering millions of views on YouTube. She appeared on three major American cable news networks – CNN, Fox News, and MSNBC – and was also invited to appear on The View, as well as Anderson Cooper and Stephen Colbert’s shows.
Politico published Wahl’s firsthand account of her early career, how she was recruited to RT, and her frustrations working for the Russian-funded network. James Kirchick, Wahl’s contact, admitted to having foreknowledge of her resignation but denied any suggestion that he had orchestrated the event, stating that Wahl did what she did on her own volition and that she first reached out to him months earlier following his own on-air protest on the network against anti-gay legislation in Russia. Wahl told Slate’s David Weigel that her detractors were acting as if her contact with Kirchick was part of a conspiracy. It all started when he unexpectedly criticized Russia’s anti-gay laws during an appearance on RT.
Wahl has written for Newsy. Wahl addressed the Canadian Parliament on foreign interference in the digital era and spoke at a peace conference in the Hague. Wahl announced her candidacy as a Democrat for the United States House of Representatives’ 23rd congressional district in Texas in January 2019. Wahl did not appear on the Democratic primary ballot on March 3, 2020.
