Sykes began her professional career as a journalist after graduating. She began her career as a general assignment reporter for the now-defunct Los Angeles Herald-Examiner. KCOP-TV, a local independent television station (now a My Network TV affiliate), offered an internship. This led to a position as a desk assistant in the news department at Fox affiliate KTTV. Her big break came when she landed her first on-air job at WDAM-TV in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. She not only worked as a reporter, but she also hosted three shows per day and produced a newscast. She then landed her first major market job at WVUE-TV in New Orleans, Louisiana. Sykes returned to Los Angeles in December 1994 as a general assignment reporter for KABC-TV’s “Eyewitness News” program. she made her film debut as “Miss Mission” in Spike Lee’s 1988 film, School Daze. WBBM-TV in Chicago approached Sykes in late 1998 to replace Sarah Lucero as its top female weekend anchor. However, the Chicago Sun-Times reported on December 3, 1998, that She had decided “to stay put in L.A.” Sykes was promoted to co-anchor the weekend edition of “Eyewitness News” in June 1999. In 2009, she was promoted once more to co-anchor of the 11 a.m.-noon slot, and she also joined the team on “Eyewitness News This Morning.”
