In 1985, he met recording engineer Henry Hirsch, who assisted him in recording a demo of ‘Romeo Blue’ in a studio in New Jersey. He spent more than a year working on his debut album with Hirsch before embarking on a five-year tour with saxophonist Karl Denson. On September 6, 1989, Kravitz signed a record deal with Virgin Records and released his debut album, ‘Let Love Rule,’ on the label. The album included both funk and rock, which were popular at the time. he produced Madonna’s song “Justify My Love,” which Kravitz also co-wrote with Ingrid Chevez. He created a self-titled album for the French actress in 1991.
He wrote ‘Line Up’ for Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler and was also cast in Mick Jagger’s album, ‘Wandering Spirit,’ in 1993. In the same year, he worked on several projects with Al Green and Curtis Mayfield. He released his next album, ‘Are You Gonna Go My Way,’ near the end of 1993, to positive reviews from fans and music critics. The following year, he recorded ‘Deuce,’ a funk-rock version of a KISS song. In 1995, he released his album ‘Circus,’ which went on to become a smash hit, peaking at number one on the Billboard charts. Two of its singles, ‘Rock and Roll Is Dead’ and ‘Can’t Get You Off My Mind,’ were hugely successful.
