Her speech focused on the significance of his message and the influence of his visit on American leaders.[10] According to Jakes, Pope Francis evoked the memory of “Lincoln: freedom; Martin Luther King: freedom in diversity and non-exclusion; Dorothy Day: social justice and the rights of persons; and Thomas Merton: capacity for dialogue and openness to God” in his speech to the joint session of the Congress of the United States of America in Washington, D.C., on 2015.

Jakes is the New York Times’ diplomatic correspondent. She was previously the international policy editor of the Times’ Washington, D.C. bureau. Jakes worked as the deputy managing editor and later the managing editor for news at Foreign Policy magazine from 2017 to 2019. She co-wrote “The American Pope,” which was published in 2016 by the Vatican. She formerly worked for the Associated Press for almost 12 years, serving as Baghdad bureau chief and national security reporter. She formerly worked as a national correspondent for Hearst Newspapers and at the Times Union in Albany, New York. Jakes has considerable ground reporting experience in Iraq, covering insurgent attacks as well as military and diplomatic relations.

Her work has been focused on international security, with a particular emphasis on conflict reporting. Jakes has covered war and sectarian strife in Iraq, Afghanistan, Israel, the West Bank, and Northern Ireland, among other places.
