Jakes worked as the deputy managing editor and later the managing editor for news at Foreign Policy magazine from 2017 to 2019. She co-wrote “The American Pope,” which was published in 2016 by the Vatican. She formerly worked for the Associated Press for almost 12 years, serving as Baghdad bureau chief and national security reporter. She formerly worked as a national correspondent for Hearst Newspapers and at the Times Union in Albany, New York. Jakes has considerable ground reporting experience in Iraq, covering insurgent attacks as well as military and diplomatic relations.
