Secor relocated to Los Angeles after finishing community college. He appeared in plays such as And a Nightingale Sings (1986) at the Santa Monica Playhouse, Look Homeward, Angel (1986), and In the Jungle of Cities (1987) at the Pasadena Playhouse. Secor’s first notable television job was as Brian Bradford on the soap opera Santa Barbara, which was quickly followed by a stay on the hospital drama St. Elsewhere, where he played Brett Johnston, an AIDS sufferer. Secor was cast as Det. Tim Bayliss in the pilot of Homicide: Life on the Street in 1993, after appearing in various films including Heart of Dixie (1989), City Slickers (1991), Sleeping with the Enemy (1991), Delusion (1991), and Untamed Heart (1993).

Following a successful seven-year tenure on Homicide, Secor moved on to a brief appearance on Party of Five and two feature films, Endsville and Beat. During the fall of 2000, he returned to television as a doctor in the CBS drama City Of Angels for nine weeks. On March 18, 2001, he appeared in the made-for-TV film Bailey’s Mistake, which aired on ABC. In the fall of 2001, he participated in the pilot episode of Crossing Jordan and had a recurring supporting role in the aborted ABC production of Steven Bochco’s Philly from September 2001 to May 2002. He appeared as a guest star on CBS’s Without a Trace in the fall of 2002. Infidelity from Lifetime premiered in the spring of 2004 opposite the former.

From 2005 to 2006, he co-starred in ABC’s Commander in Chief with Geena Davis as Rod Calloway, the spouse and ‘first gentleman’ of President Mackenzie Allen, the first female President. He appeared as Alan ‘Skip’ Matthews in the short-lived show Hidden Palms in 2007. In ABC’s Women’s Murder Club from 2007 to 2008, Secor played Hanson North, a defense attorney with a romantic history with Laura Harris’ character. He also played Dr. Robert L. Brooks in Boston Legal, who was married to Phoebe Prentice, a previous flame of Alan Shore. He also appeared as Doug Bancroft on Ghost Whisperer. In August 2010, he appeared as an airline pilot involved in narcotics smuggling on The Closer.

Secor featured as Ambassador Michael Reeves in the fifth episode of Hawaii Five-0’s first season, “Nalowale,” on the show’s resurrection. In The Purge: Election Year, he played presidential candidate Minister Edwidge Owens, who ran against Sen. Charlene “Charlie” Roan (Elizabeth Mitchell). He also appeared as Thomas Snow/Icicle in The Flash’s fifth season in 2018-19. Secor published his semi-autobiographical book DEATH of the ACTOR: Everything I Never Learned About Anything in 2021, in which he analyzes the concept of nonduality as it relates to acting.
