Dunst returned to the character of Mary Jane Watson in Spider-Man 3 in 2007. In contrast to its predecessors, Spider-Man 3 earned mixed reviews from critics. The New Statesman’s Ryan Gilbey criticized Dunst’s character, saying that “the film-makers couldn’t come up with much for Mary Jane to do other than scream a lot.” Nonetheless, with a global gross of $891 million, it is the series’ most commercially successful film and Dunst’s highest-grossing film to the end of 2008. After initially agreeing to do three Spider-Man films, Jane stated that she might consider doing a fourth if Raimi and Maguire returned. The fourth film was shelved in January 2010, and the Spider-Man film series was relaunched, thereby removing the trio from the franchise.

Kirsten Dunst Bring It On

Dunst appeared in the comedy Bring It On in 2000 as Torrance Shipman, the captain of a cheerleading squad. The film received largely excellent reviews, with several critics praising her performance. A. O. Scott praised her “a terrific comic actress, largely because of her great expressive range, and the nimbleness with which she can shift from anxiety to aggression to genuine hurt” in his assessment. Even though he thought the film didn’t give her as fine a role as she had in either Dick or The Virgin Suicides, Salon’s Charles Taylor commented that “among contemporary teenage actresses, Dunst has become the sunniest imaginable parodist.”

The Village Voice’s Jessica Winter commended Dunst’s portrayal, saying it was “as sprightly and knowingly daft as her turn in Dick,” and that “[Dunst] provides the only major element of Bring It On that plays as tweaking parody rather than slick, strident, body-slam churlishness.” Despite giving the film a negative review, Peter Stack of the San Francisco Chronicle praised Dunst for her willingness “to be as silly and cloyingly agreeable as it takes to get through a slapdash film.”
