Acevedo was upgraded to series regular in season two after securing the role of Miguel Alvarez on Oz. He appeared in the following episodes: 1-26; 34-36; and 41-56. Among his other prominent performances is Hector Salazar in Law & Order: Trial by Jury (2005) and Staff Sergeant Joe Toye in HBO’s Band of Brothers (2001), both produced by Steven Spielberg. He appeared as a guest star on popular television shows such as NYPD Blue and 24. On the television sitcom The Black Donnellys, he had a notable recurring part. He has appeared in several films and miniseries, including The Thin Red Line, Invincible (2006), Boiler Room (2000), Dinner Rush (2000), Arresting Gena (1997), and Kirk and Kerry (1997).

In 2008, he was cast as Charlie Francis in the Fox science fiction horror television series Fringe. He appeared in the first season of the show, and in the episode “Unleashed,” Acevedo’s real-life wife, actress Kiersten Warren, played his on-screen wife. His character was killed off in the second season opening, but Acevedo returned for two more appearances as a shape-shifting imposter. Due to the shapeshifter’s death in the previous episode, Acevedo was no longer acknowledged as a primary cast member after the fifth episode of season two. Despite this, he is billed as a main cast member for a standalone episode named “Unearthed” which was taped at the end of the first season and shown as the eleventh episode of the second season.
