Lincoln made his television debut in the Channel 4 sitcom Drop the Dead Donkey episode “Births and Deaths” in 1994. In 1995, shortly after graduating from drama school, he landed his first major role as Edgar “Egg” Cook, one of the main protagonists in the BBC drama This Life. He went on to appear in British television programs and dramas such as The Woman in White, The Canterbury Tales, and Wuthering Heights, including the Channel 4 sitcom Teachers as probationary teacher Simon Casey. In 2010, he co-starred with Richard Armitage in the Sky One series Strike Back as university lecturer and psychologist Robert Bridge. Lincoln starred in a number of films, including Human Traffic.

Lincoln has been in several plays, including Hushabye Mountain in 1999, Blue/Orange in 2000 and 2001, The Late Henry Moss in 2006, and The Parlour Song in 2009. He has provided narration for documentaries, commercials, and government campaigns. He directed two episodes of Teachers’ third season, for which he received a BAFTA nomination in 2004 for Best New Director (Fiction). TVLine noted of Lincoln’s performance on “Try” that he “could act his way from A to Z all within the span of an hour.” The Independent’s Jacob Stolworthy described Lincoln’s performance in the opening episode of season seven as “a moment where Andrew Lincoln excels, his character coming full circle.” Lincoln was cast and filmed in the drama Penguin Bloom in 2019, his first non-Walking Dead role since 2010.
