In the film, she portrays 13-year-old Marnie Piper, a teenage witch anxious to learn magic from her grandmother Aggie, played by Debbie Reynolds.
Brown described her audition for the film in September 2016, when she was asked to react to a conversation in which the character Marnie was revealed to be a witch. Brown auditioned for the part twice before getting cast. Halloweentown premiered on October 17, 1998, and was warmly appreciated by audiences, prompting Disney Channel to make three sequels, with Brown reprising her role as Marnie in two of them. She was replaced by Sara Paxton in the fourth sequel, Return to Halloweentown, a choice that Brown expressed confusion and unhappiness over. Fans of the franchise were dissatisfied with Paxton’s portrayal of the character, and some major media publications were scathing.
In 2016, Brown and co-author Diane Yslas released Poppin’s Pumpkin Patch Parade, a Halloween-themed children’s book. Brown originally became known for her role as Marah Lewis on the CBS soap opera Guiding Light (1993-1998, 2006), which garnered her a Daytime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Younger Actress in a Drama Series. She received additional critical praise for her role as Ava Walker in the comedy-drama film Tumbleweeds, which earned her the Independent Spirit Award for Best Breakthrough Performance.
