McKidd made his stage debut in Caryl Churchill’s new play, Far Away. He portrayed Todd, Joan’s romantic partner. McKidd was cast as Father Deegan in the 1996 Christmas episode of Father Ted after playing Tommy Mackenzie in Trainspotting. Malky Johnson in Small Faces was a later role. In 2004, he portrayed James Hepburn, 4th Earl of Bothwell, Mary, Queen of Scots’ third husband, in the BBC miniseries Gunpowder, Treason & Plot. In 1999, he appeared as part of an ensemble cast in Mike Leigh’s Topsy Turvy, a film about the creation of Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Mikado. The actors researched their historical characters and used this knowledge to help develop dialogue for scenes blocked out by Leigh during extensive rehearsals. McKidd, like the rest of the cast, sang his own parts in the operettas portrayed in the film.

In the British film Understanding Jane, directed by Caleb Lindsay, he played Elliot. He appeared in Ridley Scott’s Kingdom of Heaven as well as the film adaptation of Nicholas Nickleby in 2002. Despite beginning with a large audience, the show lost about half of its viewers during its run and suffered from the fractious situation in the United States at the time due to the writer’s strike. There were thirteen episodes produced. McKidd’s performance in Rome led to his casting as Dr. Owen Hunt in Grey’s Anatomy. He made his directorial debut in the seventh season of the show, directing the episode “Don’t Deceive Me (Please Don’t Go)”.

McKidd has done voice work for the video game Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, portraying Jezz Torrent, the flame-haired lead singer of the fictional Scottish hard rock band Love Fist. In Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, he provided the voice for the character John “Soap” MacTavish. In the 2012 Disney/Pixar film Brave, he voiced Lord MacGuffin and his son Young MacGuffin. McKidd, who grew up in Elgin, used a Doric dialect for Young MacGuffin, and one of his running gags is that not even Lord MacGuffin understands what Young MacGuffin is saying.
