Kene Holliday is an American actor who has performed on stage, film, and television. He is well known for his role as Tyler Hudson, Ben Matlock’s initial private investigator, on Matlock and Sgt. Curtis Baker on Carter Country from 1977 to 1979. His first performance was with the inaugural theater group at the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, D.C. He led workshops as a founding member of the D.C. Black Repertory Company.

Kene Holliday Career
He was “jazzed” by a theatre history class, and acting became his new love. In 1969, while an undergraduate, he portrayed Yank in Eugene O’Neill’s The Hairy Ape. He was the first black person to play a lead role on the college’s “main stage.” After graduating from college, he joined the Inaugural Theater Group at the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, D.C. He led workshops as a founding member of the D.C. Black Repertory Company. He was sacked in 1975 due to ongoing drug and alcohol problems. His chemical misuse continued throughout the next 14 years. Despite these issues, he portrayed Carlyle.
That play led him to Los Angeles in 1976, where he guest-starred on various shows, including Kojak, What’s Happening!!, The Incredible Hulk, Quincy, M.E., Lou Grant, Soap and its spin-off series, Benson; The Jeffersons; The Fall Guy; Hart to Hart, and Doogie Howser, M.D. He appeared as a guest star on numerous more shows. His first “featuring” television series was Carter Country, in which he co-starred as Sgt. Curtis Baker with Victor French from 1977 until 1979. He also appeared in Roots: The Next Generations and a number of pilots that did not become regular series. Kene voiced the character Roadblock in the 1980s cartoon series G.I. Joe and the 1987 film G.I. Joe: The Movie.
In 1985, he appeared in the television film Badge of the Assassin. In early 1986, while performing the voice of Roadblock, he received a call from producers Fred Silverman and Dean Hargrove. He was the original option to play Matlock’s private investigator Tyler Hudson in the Matlock series, starring TV veteran Andy Griffith. In a 2012 interview with Blake Radio, Holliday stated that when he was 11 years old, he occasionally watched The Andy Griffith program; he recognized all of the characters from his mentor’s program and won the Matlock part. He was subsequently let go from the series owing to continuous worries about his substance misuse.
He has made numerous television and film appearances, including parts in G.I. Joe: The Movie (1987), CBS’s made-for-television film Miracle On The Mountain (2000), Hope & Faith (2004), and Law and Order: Special Victims Unit (2005). In 1998, he published a poetry collection named The Book of K-III: Kene Holliday’s Contemporary Poetics. Holliday became a traveling preacher [when?], and he and his wife spent the following ten years preaching at gospel musicals. In 2002, Holliday became a 24-hour caregiver for his mother, who had Alzheimer’s disease, and later joined the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America. While caring for his mother, he accepted the lead part in the film Great World of Sound in 2007.
