Stanford Brown’s acting career began shortly after graduation. He appeared in Joseph Papp’s New York Shakespeare Festival. Later, he began his cinematic career with a supporting role in the political drama film ‘The Comedians’ (1967). The film included stars such as Richard Burton, Elizabeth Taylor, Peter Ustinov, and Roscoe Lee.
In 1968, he appeared in Peter Yates’s action thriller ‘Bullitt’. It is based on the 1963 novel ‘Mute Witness’. The picture performed well commercially, grossing $42 million on a $4 million budget. He then starred as Dr. John Fisher in Joseph Sargent’s 1970 sci-fi thriller ‘Colossus: The Forbin Project’.

He appeared in the 1972 political drama ‘The Man’. The same year, he starred in the action comedy picture ‘Wild in the Sky’. He played a leading role in the 1977 television miniseries ‘Roots’. The miniseries, based on the 1976 novel ‘Roots: The Saga of an American Family’, was a huge success, winning a Golden Globe and a Peabody Award. Georg played Tom Harvey in the miniseries and reprised the character in the sequel, ‘Roots: The Next Generation’. In 1980, he starred in the television film ‘The Night the City Screamed’, followed by ‘The Jesse Owens Story’ in 1984.

In 1985, he played a supporting role in another miniseries, ‘North and South’, which was based on John Jakes’ novel trilogy. It was about two men who are closest friends but find themselves and their families on opposing sides of a war. Georg received an Emmy Award for Outstanding Directing in 1986 for directing the final episode of the fifth season of the police procedural series ‘Cagney & Lacey’. He made an appearance in the 1991 comedy film ‘House Party 2’. He has appeared in the TV shows ‘Linc’s’ and ‘Nip/Tuck’. He directed several episodes of the second season of the television series ‘Hill Street Blues’.
