On the Showtime comedy-drama series United States of Tara, Gilchrist co-starred as Marshall Gregson, the primary character’s son, from 2009 until the show’s 2011 finale. In the 2009 film It’s Kind of a Funny Story, Gilchrist was cast in the starring role of Craig Gilner. The movie debuted in January 2010 at the Sundance Film Festival. Gilchrist has a co-starring role in the movie It Follows in 2014.
In 2015, he portrayed the major character Daniel Austin in the movie Dark Summer, appeared in the short drama Share and played John Lovett in The Stanford Prison Experiment and William in Len and Company. He was a co-star in the movie The Good Neighbor (2016).He played Henry in the 2017 Chris Sivertson-directed movie Heartthrob.
