She was secondly married to actor Matthew Macfadyen who she met on the set of BBC’s Spooks, which they wedded in November 2004. She was rumored t be bisexual after her after working on the television adaptation of Tipping the Velvet in 2002, she cleared the rumor in Radio Times by saying that, she meant that t everyone is a little bit bisexual.

Storyline

Banaz Mahmod, 20, was declared missing by Rahmat Suleimani, her boyfriend. In the months leading up to her death, investigators learned that she had been in touch with the police repeatedly. She had left a note naming several men, including her uncle, who had plotted to kill her, she said. Two of the men on her list have fled to Iraq already. Mohammed Hama, one of the missing main suspects, is reported bragging of how Banaz was raped, murdered, and disposed of her body. Hama pleads guilty to a murder charge and is accused of her murder by his two co-conspirators.  Rahmat and Bekhal are compelled to join the witness protection program after providing testimony. The drama ends with DCI Goode, DS Andy Craig, and DS Stuart Reeves watching the operation.

In the 1990s, Hawes first appeared in supporting roles in Troublemakers, Dennis Potter’s Karaoke, and Heartbeat in the public eye. She has appeared, including Wives and Daughters and The Vicar of Dibley, in many BBC adaptations of classical and modern literature. It was announced in February 2006 that Hawes had substituted Jonell Elliott as Lara Croft’s voice. She was cast in Ashes to Ashes, the spin-off from the hit BBC series Life on Mars, in 2007 as Alex Drake. In 2009, in a 6-episode ITV series, Identity, she played Det Supt Martha Lawson. She appeared as Lady Agnes Holland in the three-episode relaunch of Upstairs, Downstairs in December 2010. She guest-starred in 2014 as Ms. Delphox in the eighth Doctor Who season. Her appearance as BBC Detective Inspector Lindsay Denton.

In 2012, Hawes started collaborating with UNICEF; she became a UNICEF ambassador in 2017. Visiting Syrian refugee children and families living in the Za’atari refugee camp and host communities in Amman was her main priority.

For her appearance in Ashes to Ashes, Hawes received the’ Glamour Best UK Television Actress Award’ in 2008. She was also nominated for the same role for a TV Choice Award and for the Best Actress Award at the 2009 Crime Thriller Awards. She received a Leading Actress nomination at the 2015 British Academy Television Awards for her role in Line of Duty. She was nominated for the same award for Bodyguard and for Mrs Wilson’s Supporting Actress in 2019.
