She was the editor of The Virginia Advocate, the school’s conservative newspaper. Obenshain served on the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia as an appointee of Governors George Allen and Jim Gilmore from 1995 to 2000, executing each governor’s ideas for fiscal reform and program accountability. From 2004 to 2006, she was the Republican Party of Virginia’s first female chairperson. Following the Senator’s loss in the 2006 midterm elections, she stepped down from that position on November 15, 2006, to work as Senator George Allen’s Chief of Staff for the remainder of his tenure in the United States Senate.

She gained national recognition as state GOP chair for her outspoken opposition to tax increases and the rising role of government at the local and national levels. During her term, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution referred to her as one of the GOP’s rising stars. Obenshain has spoken on campus for the Clare Boothe Luce Policy Institute and the Young America Foundation. For the past eighteen years, she has lectured on college campuses on issues such as “The New Face of Feminism: It’s Wearing Lipstick,” “Our Descent into Liberalism,” and “America’s Noble Heritage: Hope from the Founding Fathers.” Kate travels the country speaking on a wide range of topics, including
