Justin Tyler Berfield is an American retired actor, writer, and producer. He is recognized for his portrayals of Reese on the family sitcom Malcolm in the Middle, and Ross Malloy on the WB sitcom Unhappily Ever After.

Berfield made his first appearance on film at the age of five, in a Folgers coffee advertisement. As a small child, he appeared in 20 more nationally broadcast American advertisements. He made his television debut in the short-lived series The Good Life (1994), co-starring alongside Drew Carey. Berfield also appeared in the television series Hardball, The Boys Are Back, and The Mommies (1994-1995). Berfield’s first long-running television job was as Ross Malloy on Unhappily Ever After (1995-1999), in which he starred in 100 episodes. In 1995, he (then 9) was one of 3000 young performers who auditioned for the role of young Anakin Skywalker in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace.

Berfield’s big break came in 1999, when Linwood Boomer cast him as Reese, the troublesome older brother of Frankie Muniz’s titular character on the Fox sitcom Malcolm in the Middle, which debuted on January 9, 2000. He appears in all 151 episodes of the series. Malcolm in the Middle ended in May 2006, but Berfield was busy for another six years, focusing on production work. He had a one-time appearance in the series Sons of Tucson.
Berfield was asked to be a National Youth Ambassador for Ronald McDonald House Charities, which he did for three years before turning 18. He has worked with St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and, most recently, Virgin Unite, the charitable arm of the Virgin Group.
