Helen Torrance, Philip’s foster mother and the sheriff of Tivoli, New York, goes to investigate the deaths and discovers that the FBI is already investigating. Kamilah Davis, an FBI agent, informs Helen that the three bodies were the result of a normal gang homicide tied to a drug trafficking crime family. Despite being urged to stay away, Helen feels rejuvenated and suspects there is more going on. She and her deputy, Tony, begin their investigation with the car parked outside the cabin.
