McDermitt reached the finals of the fourth season of Last Comic Standing. In the 2009 television film Rehab for Rejects, he played Larry. McDermitt then appeared as Brandon in the TV Land sitcom Retired at 35. The show aired for two seasons between 2011 and 2012 before being canceled. Producers announced in October 2013 that McDermitt has been cast as Eugene Porter, a character from the comic book The Walking Dead, for the fourth season of the TV show of the same name.
