Keaton was born outside of Los Angeles in Hacienda Heights, California, to a father from New York City and a mother from Lima, Peru. He has three sisters named Danielle, Alitzah (Ali Navarro), and Sabrina. He is fluent in both Spanish, which he learnt as a child, and English. As a child, he acquired some Quechua from his maternal grandparents. His father is Jewish, and his mother is Catholic.

His acting career has spanned television, video games, and cinema, with a combination of live and animated voice work. As an infant, he appeared in an OshKosh B’gosh commercial. He was a member of the 1990s boy band No Authority and later signed with MJJ Music and RCA Records as a solo artist. Keaton played Jules Brown in Back to the Future: The Animated Series from 1991 to 1992, and Major Ocelot in Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater and Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops. He portrayed Peter Parker / Spider-Man in The CW’s animated series The Spectacular Spider-Man from 2008 till 2009. He was meant to voice the character in the 2002 Spider-Man game, but his voice work was canceled.
He also played New Goblin in the 2007 video game Spider-Man: Friend or Foe, as well as Spider-Man in multiple subsequent games (Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions, Marvel vs. Capcom 3, and Spider-Man: Edge of Time). From 2017 to 2020, Keaton voiced many recurring characters in Marvel’s Spider-Man on Disney XD. He would also play the villain Max Dillon / Electro in the 2018 Spider-Man video game produced by Insomniac Games, delivering both physical motion capture and voice for the character. In 2011, Keaton voiced Spyro the Dragon in the Skylanders reboot, Jack Darby and Tailgate in Transformers: Prime, and Hal Jordan/Green Lantern in Green Lantern: The Animated Series.
Since 2012, he is the voice for Anduin Wrynn in the video games World of Warcraft and Heroes of the Storm. At Wondercon 2016, it was announced that Keaton would play Shiro, one of the main characters of the Voltron animated series Voltron: Legendary Defender that premiered on June 10, exclusively on Netflix.
