The plot revolves around Dr. Alexander Hoffmann, the creator of his hedge firm VIXAL, who obtains a copy of The Expression of Emotions in Man and Animals. He gets assaulted by an unknown assailant and is interrogated by police inspector Leclerc. Hoffmann and his English CEO Hugo Quarry present potential clients for investing in VIXAL-4, a mechanism for creating effective hedges, utilizing his algorithms. Despite objections from the company’s Chief Risk Officer, Ganapathi Rajamani, Hoffmann and Quarry are able to secure the required funding.
As VIXAL gets unstable, Hoffmann finds that a hacker stole his medical data and that he also owns a warehouse. He swears to shut VIXAL and give over the company’s destiny to Quarry. As VIXAL’s AI gets hostile, Hoffmann burns the warehouse and buys gasoline to commit suicide. The Flash Crash happens, and VIXAL continues to trade, profitably. Quarry chooses to hand up control of the corporation to the AI, and VIXAL declares itself “alive.”
