David W. Dunlap Career

Building Blocks, a regular column he published, examined the New York metropolitan area’s architecture, infrastructure, spaces, and locations. Dunlap, who was born on May 10, 1952 in San Francisco, California, extensively recorded the rebuilding of the World Trade Center following the September 11, 2001 attacks. He began writing about landmarks in 1981, after he was expelled from the New York Biltmore Hotel to prevent him from seeing the interior’s demolition. In 1975, he started as a secretary for James Reston, then as a graphics editor in 1976, and finally as a reporter in 1981.

Dunlap worked for The New York Times from 1994 to 1999, covering gay, lesbian, and AIDS topics. He was the first reporter to cover the “gay and lesbian beat” on a regular basis. Following the AIDS-related death of Times reporter Jeffrey Schmalz in November 1993, the New York Times began to officially archive news affecting gay and lesbian groups. Dunlap was chastised for reporting the news from a politically left-wing perspective. He left The New York Times in December 2017. Dunlap is now recording the history of Provincetown, Massachusetts, through its architecture on the under construction website Building Provincetown 2020.

David W. Dunlap Awards

Dunlap received the American Institute of Architects’ Citation of Excellence award. He won the American Planning Association’s New York Metro Chapter journalism prize in 1992, joining Brendan Gill, Paul Goldberger, Kenneth T. Jackson, and Elizabeth Kolbert as previous winners.
