Elliott joined the staff at ABC’s Good Morning America in May 2011. On May 21, 2011, he made his debut as a substitute anchor on ABC World News’ weekend edition. He also hosted Good Afternoon America, an afternoon spin-off that aired from July 9 to September 7, 2012, as a temporary replacement for ABC’s canceled chat shows The Revolution, alongside Lara Spencer. On March 1, 2016, CBS News announced that Elliott had been hired as the lead anchor for CBSN, the company’s internet news service. David Rhodes, president of CBS News, revealed why Elliott was hired “”We’re going to need as much from him as he can bring in these many areas of reporting and anchoring,” he continued. Another reason it’s the ideal environment for him is that it’s almost limitless. At CBSN, we have a lot of dedicated employees, but there aren’t enough of them.”

Elliott announced his departure from CBSN on-air on February 10, 2017, but added, “Knowing how things work around here, I may see you again on Monday morning.” An official told Elliott that CBS wanted to promote him to a larger role as a field correspondent, where he would file reports for CBS’s television news shows. The quick announcement, however, caught CBS management off surprise, and they had no preparations for him to be promoted from CBSN. Elliott was fired on February 13, 2017.
