Tenney made his stage debut in Mike Nichols’ The Real Thing, a touring production. He worked consistently on and off Broadway, as well as in a regional theater. His Broadway credits include Biloxi Blues, The Substance of Fire, and The Heiress. He first appeared on television in a number of short-lived series, including Steven Bochco’s Brooklyn South and Kristin Chenoweth’s sitcom Kristin, as well as guest appearances on Cybill, Will & Grace, Murphy Brown, Spenser: for Hire, and Get Real. All four major networks canceled the series with Tenney as a regular. Tenney starred in TNT’s The Closer as Special Agent Fritz Howard, the husband of Deputy Chief Brenda Leigh Johnson (Kyra Sedgwick).

HTenney played the villainous CEO of Benbrook Oil Company in Free Willy 2: The Adventure Home and Alex Whitman’s (Matthew Perry) friend in Fools Rush In. [e was Hank Riley. After The Closer ended, he continued to appear in its spin-off, Major Crimes, where he became an LAPD deputy chief in the third season. Later, in Brothers & Sisters, he played Dr. Simon Craig, Nora Walker’s (Sally Field) love interest. In 2013, he co-starred in TNT’s King & Maxwell with Rebecca Romijn as Sean King, a former Secret Service agent and lawyer who works as a private investigator. The show was canceled after only one season. He was cast in a recurring role on Shonda Rhimes’ drama series Scandal in 2014.
