She attended the University of Houston on an athletic scholarship and graduated with a degree in political science. She won bronze at the Pan American Games in 1987 and was the US champion in 1989. She won three NCAA titles (1986, 1987, and 1989) while playing for the University of Houston. She graduated from the University of Houston Law Center with a J.D. in 1995.
