Chestnut won the 92nd Annual Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest on July 4, 2007, in New York, New York. After losing to Kobayashi in 2005 and 2006, Joey defeated six-time defending champion Takeru “Tsunami” Kobayashi by consuming a world record 66 hot dogs and buns (HDB) in 12 minutes. He successfully defended his title the following year, winning a five-hot dog eat-off after tying Kobayashi in consuming 59 HDB in ten minutes. Chestnut defeated Kobayashi once more on July 4, 2009, by consuming a world record 68 HDB and winning his third consecutive title. Chestnut won his fourth consecutive Mustard Belt eating 54 HDB on July 4, 2010.
Kobayashi did not compete in the 2010 competition due to a contract dispute with Major League Eating. On July 4, 2011, he won his fifth championship in a row with 62 HDB. Chestnut’s sixth consecutive victory came in 2012, when he ate 68 HDB, tying his own world record from 2009. Chestnut won his seventh consecutive title in 2013, eating 69 HDB, breaking his previous world record. Chestnut won his eighth consecutive title in 2014, devouring 61 HDB.
Matt Stonie defeated Chestnut in the 2015 Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest.
