Jineane Ford Career
In high school, she joined the Future Farmers of America and became a registered meat cutter. Ford was named Fiesta Bowl Queen while attending Mesa Community College in 1978-79 before winning Miss Arizona USA in 1980. In 1980, she represented her state in the Miss USA pageant, which was broadcast live from Biloxi, Mississippi. Ford performed admirably in the preliminary round of competition, finishing eighth out of the top twelve semi-finalists who advanced to compete on the pageant’s final night. She was also a Miss Photogenic award co-winner.
Ford excelled throughout the pageant, finishing in the top five in each of the interview, swimsuit, and evening gown competitions; her best performance came in the evening gown competition, where she finished second. Overall, Ford finished first runner-up to Miss South Carolina USA Shawn Weatherly, giving her the right to take over the Miss USA title if Weatherly is unable to finish her reign. Weatherly won the Miss Universe pageant in July 1980, and Ford was crowned Miss USA in her place. Because the two competitions are linked, the two American beauty queens finished their reigns in the same apartment in New York, which was provided as part of their prize package.
Ford went on to work in the entertainment industry after handing over her crown to Kim Seelbrede in 1981. She worked as a butcher at a Vons supermarket in Southern California while looking for acting work. She appeared in several television series and films. She then returned to Arizona and began a long career in local television, almost entirely in Phoenix with the exception of a few years in Tampa. She began her career at KTVK before moving on to KPNX 12 News in Phoenix in 1991, where she co-anchored 12 News Today and 12 News Midday. She remained with the station until January 2, 2007, when she left full-time anchoring at KPNX.
She is also a business owner, having purchased Arizona’s oldest log lodge, restoring it, and reopening it for business as Mama Bears’s Restaurant and Honey Bear Antiques and Lodge in Pinetop-Lakeside. Ford has received state awards for Best New Business and Historic Preservation, and she was inducted into The Arizona Broadcasters Association Hall of Fame in 2016.
