He interned at The Jersey Journal after graduating in 1975, where he published a weekly piece about popular music. He also contributed to The Record with articles. Dow Jones & Company employed Fusilli in its Corporate Relations department in 1982, with responsibility for employee communications. Soon after, he began contributing to the Journal’s new Leisure and Arts page, which was edited by Raymond Sokolov. In 1986, The New York Times Magazine published his essay “A Wall Street Rocker” Fusilli departed Dow Jones and joined Sanofi, Inc., the U.S. holding company for Paris-based Sanofi S.A., while continuing to make occasional contributions to the Journal.

During his 12 years with the company, Fusilli rose through the ranks to become Vice President, Corporate Communications, a position in which he frequently traveled to Paris, accompanied the chairman and CEO Jean-François Dehecq, and worked with Oscar de la Renta, Yves Saint Laurent and other fashion luminaries whose fragrances were marketed by Sanofi. He left the company in 2001.

Fusilli was named The Wall Street Journal’s first rock-and-pop critic in 2009, and he published a weekly piece for the paper’s Arts section until 2018. Closing Time, the first in a mystery series starring private detective Terry Orr and his daughter Bella, was released on September 10, 2001 by Penguin Putnam. It was the last novel set in New York’s Tribeca sector before the September 11 terrorist attacks. Following that, A Well-Known Secret was the first novel set in New York after the attacks, addressing the impact on the city, the Tribeca neighborhood, and the psyches of the recurring characters.
